A Santa Rosa Cartoonist’s ‘Fire Story’ Comes to Life

Emmy Award Winner: Public/Current/Community Affairs-Feature/Segment, 2018 for animation and co-direction.

Just one day after his house and everything in it burned to the ground, October 9, 2017, the cartoonist, Brian Fies, bought some cheap paper, Sharpies, and highlighters, and got to work reporting what he and his wife experienced. The response was massive. In the week after the fire, an online version of Fies' comic, 'A Fire Story,' was viewed by over half a million people. KQED Arts brought his story to life. With moving animation, and with narration straight from Fies and his wife, Karen Fies, 'A Fire Story' also includes an epilogue from the artist about the long process of recovery, and the stability of home.

What are viruses? And how do these tiny infectious particles, which straddle the line between life and non-life, multiply and spread to become global pandemics?

This animation, an accompaniment to the article, What’s a virus, anyway? published in the Stanford School of Medicine SCOPE blog, delves into these questions and more. The animation was created in conjunction with Bruce Goldman, the author of the original article, and Jan Carrette, an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology.

Ancient skeletons used to map the genetic history of Rome

An increasing number of studies have used DNA sampled from ancient skeletons to fill in important details of human history. In a new study, Stanford researchers and their European colleagues drew on ancient DNA to construct the first genetic history of Rome. This animation summarizes their findings.
